Carrie Wright Smashum, long time educator and community leader, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 9, 2022. She enjoyed a 37-year marriage to William Smashum, Jr. until his death in 1987. "Gran," as she was affectionately known over the years to her family and friends, was born on Edisto Island on April 10, 1926, and pursued a 40-year career as a teacher at Minnie Hughes Elementary School on Yonges Island. She was recognized as the school's Teacher of the Year in 1983.

Throughout her career Mrs. Smashum dedicated herself to community service, leading efforts to establish programs for adult education on Yonges Island and served as an officer of Queen of Sheba Tent 202, as a member of the South Carolina Federation of Women, and as an advisor to the local chapter of the 4H Clubs of America. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Edisto Island. She later held a long association with Morris Street Baptist Church in Charleston where she served on the Missionary Board and Education Ministry.

Mrs. Smashum enjoyed travel, and the crafts of quilting and weaving traditional sweetgrass baskets. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and served as the family's matriarch, as counselor, confidant, loving mother, and caring friend to all. She is survived by her daughters, Jacquelyn Smashum Heyward and Olivia Smashum Unthank; sons-in-law, James Heyward and Michael Unthank; grandchildren, James Smashum Heyward (Brenda), Jarvetta Heyward and Alexandra Unthank (David); great-grandchildren, Jayson, Jarad, Jayde, Jayden and August; special nieces, Jeanette Richards and Carolyn Singleton; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in the name of Carrie W. Smashum to Mt. Olive Baptist Church for their Education Fund.
