Captain Sherryl L. Washington James, USA, 66, of Summerville, SC, entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 23, 2025.
Captain Sherryl L. Washington James was born September 18, 1958 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She grew up and was educated in New York City. She graduated from George Washington High School in 1975 and attended Fordham University.
She enlisted in the army in 1979 where she completed her undergraduate degree and the rigorous Officers Candidate School. She proudly served tours in Japan, Hawaii, and Germany. After retirement from the army she completed a Master of Education and a Master of Library Science from the University of Hawaii. She worked at public libraries in Hawaii, Georgia, and South Carolina during her twenty five year career. She retired in 2024 after she was diagnosed with ALS.
Sherryl enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading and the Atlanta Falcons.
She leaves to mourn her wife, Barbara Gilford; daughter, Maya James; son-in-law, Anthony Smalley; grandson due in 2025; daughter, Kathryn James; sister, Maya Denise Mack; brother, Paul Getty Washington; favorite aunt, Kathy Burns; and favorite uncle, Oliver Burns.
She will be interred at the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC at a later date.
