Mrs. Rachel Pitt, 75, of James Island, SC, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

Rachel Pauline Elizabeth Counts Pitt

Rachel Pauline Elizabeth Counts Pitt, dedicated mother, passionate musician, and cherished community leader, was born on September 30, 1949, in Charleston, South Carolina, to the union of SFC Samuel Paul and Margaret Calista Counts. Throughout her life, Rachel embodied grace, determination, and an unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of those around her.

Rachel was educated at the Immaculate Conception School in Charleston. She pursued her passion for music as a music major at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Rachel embraced the arts from a young age and took piano lessons from a neighbor at age eight. She had her first ministry assignment at the tender age of 14 at Old Bethel United Methodist Church. Her lifelong love for music was evident in her studies and her remarkable contributions as a musician. For over 35 years, she served as the lead liturgical musician at Morris Brown AME Church. She inspired countless congregants with her piano and pipe organ skills while leading the Combined Choir, Youth Choir, and Children's Choir and others.

Rachel's professional career was marked by her role in Project Management at the Charleston County School District. Her dedication and expertise made a lasting impact on the local educational community. Her leadership went beyond her professional life. She played an intricate role in organizations within her church's music ministry and a member of the Women's Missionary Society. She was recently honored by the class leader's board as Class Leader Emeritus and an active member of the Career and Guidance Auxiliary Committee.

Her passion for music, learning, and service was rivaled only by her commitment to her family. Rachel is lovingly survived by her children—Vaughn Pitt (Michele) and Kendra Heyward (James). As well as her cherished sibling, Dr. Margaret Counts-Spriggs (Edward), six grandchildren, nephew, nieces, and a host of other family and friends who will forever carry her legacy in their hearts.

Rachel's life was a beautiful symphony of service, creativity, and love. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, joy in every musical note, and tireless efforts to uplift those around her. Although she is no longer with us, her legacy continues to inspire her family, friends, and the Charleston community.
