Mr. Marvin J. Heyward, 66, of North Charleston, SC, Marvin Jerant Heyward, son of the late Rev. Joe Heyward, Jr. and Ernestine Judge Heyward, was born on October 1, 1958, in Charleston, South Carolina. He departed this life on December 27, 2024, in North Charleston, South Carolina. Marvin was raised in a loving and close-knit family, grounded in the values of faith, hard work, integrity, and service to others. He was an active member of Cordesville United Methodist Church from an early age, where he learned the importance of community and compassion. After graduation from Berkeley High School in 1976, Marvin enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his country as a Medical Specialist, stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Fort Stewart, Georgia, and in Germany. Marvin was a dedicated and compassionate caregiver, providing medical support to those in need. Following his active-duty service, he enlisted in the U.S. National Guard, where he served during Desert Storm and Desert Shield. After completing his military service, Marvin returned to Charleston, where he pursued higher education at Trident Technical College, furthering his skills and knowledge. He went on to work as a Patient Care Technician at Charleston County Memorial Hospital and the Medical University of South Carolina. Marvin's final employment as a Sterile Technician was at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he provided compassionate care to veterans, a role he took great pride in. On February 12, 2000, Marvin married the love of his life, Bertha Jacqueline Heyward, and together they built a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Marvin was a proud father to Ebony Heyward, and a loving father figure to his sons, Douglas Morris and Antoine (Ashawnti) Miller. He was also an adoring grandfather to his precious grandchildren, Harmoni Morris and Kyla, Bria and Egypt Miller, who brought him immense joy in his later years. Marvin's family was the cornerstone of his life. His devotion to his family was evident in everything he did, and he will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend who always put his loved ones first. Marvin was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Rev. Joe and Ernestine Heyward and sister Yolanda Heyward. In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Marvin is survived by his brothers, Rev. Anthony Heyward, Sr. (Catherine) of Newport News, VA; and Rev. Kevin Heyward, Sr. (Angela) of Leesburg, VA, his sisters, Sylvia H. Brown (Ronald) of Hanahan, SC, and Yvonne H. Adams (Frank) of Andrews, SC; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends, all of whom will remember his generous spirit and kind heart. Though Marvin is no longer with us, his spirit and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His selflessness, dedication, and caring nature will forever be a source of inspiration to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life.
