"For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God." - Job 19:25-26
Mr. Joseph Washington, Jr, 93, of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
Joseph Washington, Jr., son of the late Joseph and Viola Washington was born, October 3, 1931, in Charleston, South Carolina. He departed this life peacefully as he rested at National Healthcare Corporation (NHC) on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Joseph, affectionately known as "Brah" and "Uncle Brah" was the 8th of 8 children.
Joseph received his formal education at Buist Elementary and Burke High School, Charleston County School system. He served his country in the United States Army attaining a honorary discharge February 4, 1955. He was then employed by the Housing Authority and South Carolina Electric & Gas for over 30 years where he retired. He was a faithful member of Azalea Drive Church of Christ from 1989, up to his passing.
Uncle Brah loved his family. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mell Jenkins, on April 26, 1957, who preceded him in death. From that union, they were blessed with one son, Kerry Allen Washington. He was also the father of Sandy, Carlethia and Mary. Also preceding him in death are his daughter, Carlethia Stroud; his siblings, William Bubba Washington, Bernice Dora Waring, Margaret McPherson, Laura Mamie Washington, Melvin Washington, Sarah Washington and his twin, Viola Washington Gantt. Joseph would spend lots of time joking with everyone but most of all loving on his big sister Sarah as he always felt he needed to be her protector. He was a God fearing man that knows Christ as his savior and made no hesitation in the last days saying, "I am ready, yall get ready. This gave the family comfort in accepting God's will in him going on to take his rest.
Joseph leaves to cherish his precious memories, his children, Kerry Allen Washington, Sandra Milligan and Mary Collins; 11 grandchildren, Latino, Shakia, Shawda, Isaiah, Ryan, Shayna, Ronnie, Jr., Antwan, Chaira, Kenny and Briona; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter; a loveable and supportive grandniece, Latonia Allen who stood by his side daily and conducted his affairs along with the steadfast support and dedication of Beverly Grant, Deborah Washington and William E. Grant; a special friend, Ellen Seabrook; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
