Obituary

Mrs. Cecile A. Toomer, 84, of Summerville, SC, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

Cecile A. Toomer was born on August 7, 1940, in Accomac, Virginia. She was the youngest of nine children born to the late John White and his wife, the late Reese Dennis White.

After graduating from college, she moved to New York City where she met and married her husband of 56 years, the late Alonzo J. Toomer, Jr. From their union, they were blessed with two daughters, Monica Toomer and Zena Toomer Harris. After years as a stay-at-home mom, Ms. Cecile chose a career as a secretary for the Office of Personnel Management for the United States government. She remained in this role until she retired in the mid-1990s. After her retirement, she relocated to Charleston, SC to be with her husband who had retired a few years earlier. He had come back to his home of Charleston to restore his family's home that was heavily damaged during Hurricane Hugo.

She enjoyed living in Charleston and after a few years of settling in, she was blessed with three grandchildren whom she adored. In her mind, there was no such thing as a spoiled grandchild, and acted on her grandmotherly right as much as she could. She was a devoted grandmother, but she was passionate about all her family. There was nothing more important than family to her.

Ms. Cecile was small in stature, but that would be the only thing that was small about her. She had a big heart and an even bigger spirit. She always took everything in stride and did not let anything keep her down. She could always find that proverbial silver lining. She always had a kind word for anyone who needed one. Many different people have said that she was one of the most loving and kindest people they have ever met.

Cecile Toomer departed from this life on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Monica Toomer and Zena Toomer Harris both of Charleston, SC; son-in-law, Derrick Harris of New York; three grandchildren, Dylan Harris of Charleston, SC; Devin Harris of New York, and Zoe Harris of Charleston, SC; one great-granddaughter, Aria Jade of Charleston, SC; one brother, Edwin White, Sr. of New Jersey; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and loving friends who will miss her dearly.
